Stanley Cup
As the oldest trophy competed for by professional athletes in North America, the silver Stanley Cup is awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs champion after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals. Donated in 1892 by Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby, the Stanley Cup is surrounded by numerous legends and traditions in the sports world. Unlike trophies in other league sports in which the winners receive a newly made trophy, the Stanley Cup winners only keep it until a new champion is declared. As such, the trophy has the names of all of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved on its chalice. Team members also have the opportunity to take the trophy with them for an entire day after winning it.
