A slang originating from the US Air Force originally meaning a pilot whose plane is positioned behind and outside the leader in a formation of flying aircraft.

Now used informally to reference the male friend in a social situation who distracts or occupies one woman in a group so that the other male friend can move in pick up their target woman.
