A modification of John Hadley's octant made by Captain John Campbell c. 1771. Whereas the octant is in the form of a sector comprising one-eighth of a circle, the sextant occupies one-sixth of a circle. With the doubling of angle provided by the rotating mirror it enables up to 120?to be measured, as against 90?for the octant.
