The term is usually applied to numbers obtained by using electrical circuits to convert the amplitude of a voltage, current or other physical quantity to digital form. A single number from the sequence is called a digital datum.

A survey which provides coordinates (horizontal or vertical) of points to which supplementary surveys are adjusted. The fundamental control survey of the United States of America provides the geodetic coordinates and plane coordinates of thousands of triangulation and traverse stations, and the elevations of thousands of bench marks. These are used in hydrographic surveys of the coastal waters, for control of the national topographic survey, and for control of surveys by state, city and private organizations.
